Drei-Ein showdown in the church. Ein outmaneuvers Drei and is about to kill her with a thrown knife, but Reiji predicts the attack and jumps in to protect Drei, taking the knife in his shoulder. Drei goes WTF and Ein ceases the attack, accepting that Reiji doesn't want Drei dead. Godoh's goons attack, and Ein pushes Drei out of the church with the wounded Reiji, while she herself stays back in a suicide mission to cover their escape.
Drei and Reiji flee to the school, hiding from Godoh and Inferno. Reiji fainting over blood loss, Drei trying to patch him up. Reconciliation scene between the two. Scythe Master and the Zarenschwestern arrive and attack. Drei and Reiji split up, and they barely manage to survive and take out their kouhais, but in the end, they end up right before Scythe Master's gun - before he is shot from behind by a terribly mauled and fatally wounded Ein, who miraculously survived the church battle but is living on borrowed time.
Pretty touching baton pass scene where Ein passes on the task to care for and protect Reiji to Drei. Uncharacteristically for Ein, she mentions that she finally understood why she always hated Drei - because she did love Reiji too after all. But at least she managed to keep him safe, and now this task is with Drei. Then she dies due to blood loss.
And Drei and Reiji turn into a modern Bonnie and Clyde/bounty hunter tag team traveling the world...

Spoiler for VN:
Ah I didn't remember that part w/SM and Elen, as I remember Reiji knocking him off. Maybe that and where Drei dashed into the Godoh group, never to be heard again, was Mio's ending. Guess I need to pop it back in[which i won't do, I'll let the anime refresh me], because all I remembered was at the very end they were together in Mexico? and that country music was god awful. Aside from that, I can see why it's the better ending. Thanks for that wonderful synopsis of the ending .
