Maito Gai is 100X better than Lee could ever hope to be. He's the
original Beautiful Beast of Konoha. He has the whole hard work thing down pat. He's not limited to taijutsu alone. He can fight just by looking at someone's
feet. He made Itachi run off and cry.
Oh, and he's Kakashi's Eternal Rival. That alone makes him worthy of recognition.

If for some strange reason you're not convinced, then you should probably find episodes 21, 22, 31 and 32 for your Lee fix.
