Part TrapThree
Maven Emeraude
Warning: Text wall because I'm the only one out of the three who didn't make a poster profile. Not necessarily a bad thing though, no?
Name: Maven Emeraude
Affiliation: TSAB Engineering Division, Device Meister
Military rank: Private 1st Class
Magical rank: C+
Call sign: Ariadne
Age: 18 (as of MC0083)
Birthday: October 12 MC0065
Height: 163cm
Magical colour: Green
Hair: Lavender, hip length
Eyes: Red
Specialty: device mechanics; capture and arrest
C.V: Kikuchi Kokoro
Spoiler for History:
A single child of the Emeraude household, Maven grew up on the receiving end of his relatives' criticisms for looking far too girly. Instead of developing a complex like any other kid that is suffering verbal abuse, Maven instead wore them on his shoulders, proud, and proceeded to use his qualities to become as girlish as he possibly could. The perfect woman… Except that she was a man.
Maven succeeded, and eventually went on to become one of the most well known students in West Cranagan(an astounding feat, considering the fact that this sector of the city is saturated with all sorts of schools and academies), not only for being cute, but also excelling in his(or her, in the eyes of everyone else) studies. Confessions, harassers and envious girls abound, Maven graduated from middle school…
And enlisted into Time-Space Administration Bureau with childhood best friend Dyna Elysion, joining the Engineering Division to learn to become a Device Meister, and Dyna’s “wings”. How he got into Bureau registered as a girl despite all their tests and screenings remains a mystery.
It is during his first break after enlistment that he meets up-and-coming conductress and budding Tuner Aina Fortissian while shopping, fighting over a pair off shoes, eventually leading to a friendship and a sort of sisterhood and became Aina’s best friend, all the while maintaining his girlish mask.
Then came Maximillian “MakubeX” “Aniki” Saanvedra, and so began the chaos in Aniki’s life, with Aina’s constant harassment and bodily assaults, and Maven’s continuous teasing and exploitation of his crush on Maven. Maven would continue exploiting Maximillian for free food and trinkets, until a certain date(that Maven played along with) resulted in a series of accidents, and a nice good application of Murphy’s Law ended with the truth of Maven’s gender hitting Max like a crotch to the face… Literally.
Convincing Aniki to keep his secret, Maven managed to keep his gender hidden from Aina until a certain trip to the beach, where Aniki’s carefully administered plans exposed Maven in the public bath. While noticeably shocked, Aina surprisingly got over it soon and unexpectedly reaffirmed her sisterhood with Maven.
-----
[“Point taken, anyone who’s read this far already knows I’m guy, so could you please refer to me with feminine pronouns to save whatever is left of my trappy pride?”
*sighs* “Fine”
-----
Now that two of his closest friends(apart from the Elysion sisters) know of Maven’s secret, Maven was more at ease with herself, no longer feeling the tension in the need of hiding her gender, though they continue to play along at her insistence.
-----
“There, wasn’t so hard to refer to me as “she” now, was it?”
"… … …”
-----
With Dyna as the bassist and Maven as the rhythm guitarist, the pair of best friends are part of a band that they set up since their middle school days, and they still jam together now and perform gigs every once in a while, which usually draws in the band’s usual fans and Maven’s rabid fanboys/stalkers..
Following the departure of the vocalist in the band, they looked around for a replacement, and there Maven met Acadiane Chrissara, the “princess” of the Chrissara Medical Conglomerate who dreams of making it big as a singer WITHOUT using her family’s influence. A year older than Maven was, naive and prone to missing most perverted jokes, Acadiane(or “Aca”, as her friends usually call her) soon discovered Maven’s gender when she walked in on Maven and Dyna having a discussion.
Spoiler for Personality:
Maven behaves pretty much like your average 18 year old teenage girl stereotype, an image that Maven goes to great lengths to maintain. Adorable, cheerful, frank and seemingly naive, there is no doubt in just how amiable and popular Maven is, even spawning various fanclubs across different middle schools back in her middle school days(all of them, of course, oblivious to her gender).
With his frail form and angelic voice, Maven takes fun in her masquerade as a girl, and often introduces herself as such, denying vehemently if anyone says otherwise. To make the disguise even more convincing, Maven has since perfected the art of thinking like a girl, no thanks to advice from his childhood friends the Elysion sisters, allowing him to mingle with any other girl naturally. If the situation calls for it, or when Maven has a flitting flight of fancy to increase his visual appeal, he will not hesitate to put on pads to produce some curves.
For those who do discover his gender, they generally face it with utmost despair and shock, who, in a continuous state of denial, are easily persuaded to not disclose his gender to anyone else with his impeccable charm and charisma as a “girl”.
The most significant of these incidents involves the case of the illustrious internet personality known to most only as “Aniki” and close friend of Maven, who barricaded himself in his room for a whole week in denial before facing reality. Even so, Maven was able to persuade him not to disclose his gender, even to their mutual close friend Aina Fortissian who remains blissfully unaware of Maven’s secret until a trip to the beach went horribly wrong.
Maven also has a bit of a mischievous streak, which is often used in conjunction with her cuteness, and is usually used tease the male population around her in any sort of ways possible.
Fully aware of her adorableness, Maven is not afraid to milk it for it’s worth, like discounts and free gifts from shops, getting besotted fanboys to do her work instead, and saving up by leeching free meals.
A person with weird tastes in food, Maven also has a strong fondness for ice cream, and frequently comes up with exotic combinations and toppings, much to Aniki’s horror when he used to give her treats while trying to woo her.
Maven keeps her devicing tools on her at all times(well, almost all), and a running gag involves her pulling out tools from her clothes when least expected, or falling out when in shock.
Maven is also a closet otaku, a fact that not many know of, other than those whom she would coerce into procuring anime from NAW-97 for her; or the unfortunate ones that would inevitably have to bear the brunt of her fangirling to, namely the Elysion sisters whom she had known since childhood.
Due to best friend Dyna Elysion’s dreams of flying(but never finding the aptitude for flying spells), Maven has taken upon herself to invent various contraptions in (often failed) attempts at making her cherished childhood friend soar. While Maven has been very sincere in building the contraptions, Dyna notes that half of them are influenced by whichever anime that Maven was crazy about at the time.
Maven also has a basic mastery of most string instruments, most commonly playing as a rhythm guitarist in a band that was set up during middle school; and proficient enough in playing the harp that budding conductress Aina Fortissian uses her as a back-up harpist during rehearsals.
Spoiler for Device: Gossamer:
Device: Gossamer
Device-type: Glove-type Armed Device
Maven’s main device. In its inactive mode, the Armed Device assumes the form of a pair of small bells that can be attached to Maven’s flip phone, or as a bracelet. Once activated, Gossamer becomes a pair of gloves. Gossamer uses a series of threads in its use – both magical and physical threads. Being a non-combative mage, Maven uses only a small handful of spells, relying instead on their versatility.
Gossamer also assists Maven during device maintenance work, acting as a power meter that measures and calculates current, resistance, mana levels and the like.
Spoiler for Device: Regular Side:
Device: Regular Side
Device type: Cellphone type(Flip phone) processing unit
While Gossamer is Maven’s flagship device, she switches between different secondary devices based on the projects she currently works on as a practical field test. While she has gone through various secondary devices, Maven confesses that the current one she’s working on might just the one for keeps.
The Regular Side is a mid-ranged device that combines the components of two projects that she’s working on at the moment: devices that can go undetected in scans; and remotely controlled weapons. The Regular Side does not have a clear distinction on the magical style it should be belong to, as it operates more like an Armed Device with the intricate control more commonly seen in Mid-Childan magic.
The Regular Side consists of a Central Module and the free flying Satellite Units. The Central Module facilitates the coordination of the Satellite Units, and the Units can be used as remotely controlled melee weapons.
The entire set of Regular Side is disguised as inconspicuous items that one can keep on oneself at all times, and has an effective control range of 75 metres(246ft). The overall theme of the device is created to get around security checks and the integration of systems used in the second project allows the device some measure against some system scans that identifies devices.
Spoiler for Central Module:
The Central Module takes the form of a cellphone-type device, and is disguised as Ikstara Mobile’s 770VD flip phone model, and processes and coordinates positions that the Satellites take. If linked to the Gossamer’s Armed Device’s Gossamer Ward spell, it allows the Central Module to detect possible threats and prepare for a counter-measure as a sort of autoguard.
Spoiler for Satellite Units:
The Satellite units are disguised as other everyday items that one can keep on oneself, like coins, keys, credit of gaming cards and hair accessories to name a few. These Satellite units are used to swarm around and strike at a target, accelerate quickly enough to be fired off as a projectile, or carry sufficient levels of mana and discharge them as a shockwave as a mid-air depth charge.
These Satellites store energy to function, and must return to the user to be charged once its power is used up. Because of Maven’s low magical output, she is not able to charge up the projectiles with enough mana in a short period of time, limiting each Satellite to C rank power levels, making the Regular Side’s attacks more of C rank magic enhanced physical attacks than C ranked magical attacks.
The primary storage batteries give the Satellites an average maximum operational time of one minute and forty-seven seconds, and a secondary storage capacity stores enough mana to automatically return to the user when the primary battery runs out of energy.
Spoiler for Types of Satellite Units:
Main Types of Satellites:
Coins: Usually used as blunt-force bludgeoning weapons, the coin form Satellites are widely versatile and can be used swarm around a target and hit it repeatedly, or accelerated as a projectile
Keys: The keys are mainly used as piercing weapons, and the teethed edge used to lacerate. Pen types are also used for piercing.
Cards: Disguised as gaming centre, credit, identification and smart cards amongst other cards, the Card type Satellites can serve two difference purposes, and can be used as slicing weapons and also used as a physical shield.
Others: Maven plays around with other types, like the hairpin types which Maven is experimenting with signalling components to see if they can act as signal relay stations to increase control range. Another type of Satellite that Maven was playing around with was to use the many tools she uses as Satellites and use them as a supporting structure to keep herself in the air. Both types aren’t seeing much progress, due to the troubles hiding a signal emitter, and Maven’s lack of magical energy to sustain herself in the air.
Spoiler for Relations:
Dyna Elysion – Maven’s best friend from childhood for as long as they remember. Being the rougher one of the two, Dyna is the one that offsets Maven’s overbearing feminity, and was the only one(other than her sister Kyrie) in elementary school who didn’t make fun of Maven’s girlish resemblance, as Maven had not yet taken up the charade of acting like a girl. With Kyrie moving onto middle school and just Dyna left to look out for Maven, the two gradually became best friends. There, the (still) naive Dyna made a bold, if convoluted in logic, suggestion – for Maven to make full use of his feminine qualities and BE one, so that no one would ridicule the poor boy for looking girlish since they would all think that he was a girl.
Enlisting her sister, they started training Maven on how most girls behaved and how they thought, and Maven managed to nail it down by his last year of elementary school. Instead of going off to the suburban middle schools in East Cranagan where they lived like most of their peers in elementary school, the two instead opted to follow Kyrie’s footsteps and enrol themselves into the Orenda Junior High School in West CranaganÂ’s Education Sector, where there would be lower chances of encountering elementary school schoolmates in a school situated in the Education Sector where probably a few dozen different schools and universities are located. Though rough, Dyna still inherited her mother’s good looks just like her sister and with Maven’s pretty looks and appeal, their presence in the Sector was not unfelt in the Sector’s general middle school populace.
A strong friendship that bonded them since childhood, theirs has their own dynamics, with Dyna usually playing the tsukkomi to Maven’s boke. Dyna is usually the one to deal with Maven fangirling over any anime series that the closet otaku might get her hands on. Dyna also entrusts her childhood desire to fly to Maven at a young age, and it is for this reason that Maven took to looking towards device mechanics to see if technology could make up for Dyna's magical deficiencies in achieving that dream.
When faced with Maven’s rabid stalkers and suitors, Dyna usually defends Maven, acting as the cockblocker, though there have been times Maven has had to pull Dyna out when the very same suitors decide to pursue her instead. Maven is also Dyna's personal device mechanic, having built her device from scratch and its system, which is more messy rather than complex in design and would take other mechanics some time in 'deciphering' the messy layout that constitutes the device.
Kyrie Elysion – 4 years older than them, Kyrie is Dyna’s sister and Maven’s other childhood friend. Kyrie is the older sister that Maven never had, and is also the one who advises Maven on how to improve her girlish facade over the years. As the older sister, Kyrie can be pretty scary at times, and even if she is a support mage, both Dyna and Maven would give her a power level of 400 points in a scale of 0-100. Indeed, Maximillian has once faced this “scary”, protective side of Kyrie once when Maven introduced them to each other, threatening to perform “acts unspeakable even in private” should he try anything “funny” to Maven.
Aina Fortissian – Initially fighting over a pair of shoes during a sale the first time they met, Aina and Maven formed a weird friendship of sorts that started out as “shopping girlfriends”, and developed into a close friendship, a first for the Tuner due to her environment. Aina considers Maven to be her best friend, and often confides in Maven all the things she cannot otherwise tell Aniki, since she has never really had anyone to indulge in girl-talk with. Aina still considers Maven her best friend even after the truth about her gender was revealed, citing the fact that Maven was already pretty much like a girl anyway.
Maximillian “MakubeX” "Aniki" Saanvedra – Maven’s relation with Maximillian started off with Aniki’s intense crush on Maven that lasted for months, where Aniki was so smitten with the adorable Maven’s undeniable charm that she literally had him wrapped swooning over her, a feat further accomplished with the occasional naughty teasings that had him fall right under her spell as all the male hot bloodedness went to his head. With her skills in Device Mechanics opening more ways for him to chat her up, and other qualities specified in the abovementioned, Maven undoubted had the legendary programmer wrapped around her little finger. With Maven’s not-so-subtle abuse of her control over him and Aina’s constant harassment, Aniki found himself trapped by the two charming ladies and his wallet suffering.
Of course, right up till the point where Maven played along when Aniki asked her out for a date, where a whole series of accidents, and a nice good application of Murphy’s Law ended with the truth of Maven’s gender hitting Max like a crotch to the faceÂ… Literally. The resulting shock ended up with Aniki locking himself up in his room for seven days in denial, a short period of paranoia where he even suspected that Aina was a guy too, despite her bountiful assets. Fantasies destroyed, Maven ceased to be wield the control she used to have over him(even if he still sees her as a girl half the time), though Maven can tease and trick Aniki into getting what she wants, even using physically seduction to get the job done. As Maven puts it, “Your heart may know otherwise, but your body can never forget”.
Being the only guys in their circle of female friends, Aniki and Mave have a brotherly relationship, though he still wonders sometimes if Maven is the "brother" or the "sister".
Acadiane Chrissara – The new vocalist of Maven's band that was scouted a year ago, and the naive "princess" of the Chrissara Medical Conglomerate. Acadiane accidentally heard Dyna and Aniki talk about Maven’s gender after a gig when the two childhood friends thought that everyone had left, discovering the fact that Maven is a guy. Naive and clumsy with secrets, Maven had to maintain a constant watch on “Aca”(as Maven calls her) to make sure she doesn’t diverge it. With Acadiane being unintentionally blunt with MavenÂ’s gender, the mechanic experienced from her what she hadn’t felt for a long time – a peer who truly treated her like a guy, who wasn’t family or the Elysions.
With the odd feeling Maven got from Acadiane’s opinion of her and the time spent tagging around, Maven found herself falling for the rich “princess”. Though Acadiane raised her guard against Maven, she eventually softened up, accepting that this is how Maven is, though she makes it clear that she still considers the guitarist as a guy. Anyone in their circle of friends will tell you that they obviously have the hots for each other, though the two remain contented with their almost-there-but-not-yet-steady relationship for now.
Z5400 "Longhorn" – With a mischievous streak as devious as Maven’s, Aniki’s device often finds “herself” working together with Maven in playing pranks on mainly on Aniki and teasing him endlessly in what the Coder calls “a most unholy alliance”, and extending this playfulness on others as well. Longhorn’s enthusiasm in teasing her master has Aniki wondering sometimes if Maven implanted secret components that forcefully commands the A.I to obey Maven. Makube is not completely wrong about this speculation – Maven merely promises the device regular upgrades with components that Aniki couldn’t afford, what with him remitting his money home, and that both Maven and Ai would habitually drain his money dry afterwards anyway. Longhorn will not spare even her partner-in-crime in pranking, and occasionally orchestrates elaborate pranks on Maven, like a certain case on April Fools’ Day that had Maven running all amok like a rabid fangirl when a succession of transformation spells had her thinking she was stalking her idol all over Cranagan.
Spoiler for "Dark Maven":
A recent manifestation in Maven’s psych, this is a dark side to the otherwise docile image that Maven has spent years to perfect. Possibly a response to the stress of suppressing what Maven might have wanted to do or behave as a boy, this side of Maven is just as much of the stereotype of a punk as Maven’s normal facade is a stereotype of a “Yamato Nadeshiko”, and usually refers to itself with male pronouns instead of Mavens usual insistence on female ones.
Rough, foul-mouthed and aggressive, “Dark Maven”, or Daven, usually surfaces when Maven chooses not to play nice in fights or when her frustration and anger gets the better of her, though have been times when the personality surfaces at the worst of times… Like a particularly romantic moment, much to Maven and Acadiane’s dismay.
As mentioned above, in this psych, Maven becomes vastly aggressive, and particularly savage. As opposed to the usual Maven’s operation of the Regular Side which uses a smoother tactical approach, Dark uses a more ferocious style of control to ruthlessly bludgeon his target. Dark also chooses not to use the Armed Device Gossamer, owing to the fact that it requires more intricacy in its control. Instead, he opts for a heavily modified version of one of Maven’s old projects – the Armed Device “Sand Tiger”, a pair of motorised skates that uses kicking power as the base for its attacks.
Spoiler for ”Sand Tiger”:
Armed Device: Sand Tiger
The Sand Tiger is a pair of motorized skates based on an old device that was designed to accompany Gossamer, and has been retrofitted to become a completely offensive pair of footwear that concentrates on kicking power.
The skates, in their usual mode, resemble nothing more than a pair of sneakers connected to a frame with wheels. The wheels themselves are not smooth, but are instead toothed with sharp “fangs”, making it extremely effective when a kick connects.
When fully deployed, the frame opens up, giving the skates an even more predatory appearance. The wheels also split along the grains of the fangs, thus looking more like a saw blade than a wheel.
The mechanism behind Sand Tiger’s attacks is based on inertia. By instantaneously accelerating and braking the wheels, a shockwave of air, or “fang”, is created, which is then kicked towards the target.
Tricks:
Bloody Fang: a basic “Fang” attack, this resembles a powerful Luftmesser, where the shockwave is enriched with mana. Though a C ranked mage, Dark Maven can pull off a B rank Fang Blade due to the reliance on the mechanical power provided by the Sand Tiger.
When fully deployed, the Sand Tiger allows Maven to utilize more powerful attacks due to its ability to process higher mechanical power.
Bloody Blade Fang Ride: Essentially a more powerful version of a regular “Fang” attack. Like the basic Fang, there are other variations of this Fang, which depends on the kicking power and momentum used to perform the “trick”.
Fang Ride Leviathan Wave: A very powerful attack performed by restraining the kick on a surface and then applying a large amount of pressure before releasing it from the restraint like a spring, a large wave-like fang is released.
