Sigh.
It amazes me how much the term 'plot hole' gets thrown around here. It's abused really.
Where to start:
Spoiler:
First, it's not far fetched at all that Rin dying would lead to a change of conviction from Obito. Have you ever been in love? Do you have any idea how love can shape/change you as a person? If you love someone unconditionally only for that person to die a tragic death, it can haunt you and change you in drastic ways. Nagato changed when Yahiko died. Naruto changed when he thought Sasuke died. Sasori changed when his parents died. The connection? All shared the emotion of love. Hell even Neji changed from love: he loved his parents a lot and his father had to die for the sake of the clan. Obito was what, 13 years old or 16 years old and Rin died? Hell yeah that could change him.
Second, I really doubt Madara is a shinobi you should underestimate. His battle with Hashirama shaped the entire universe of Naruto. Is it far fetched for him to plan 30-40 years ahead? I'd say not, considering he managed to survive for over a hundred years just on sheer will and determination alone.
I'm willing to bet Obito hones his ability to use Kamui and teleports to where Rin is before she dies, but having a broken body, he can't do anything to save her. Watching her die from a broken body, Madara's words are confirmed to him that the world is full of pain and suffering. Having no where to go and not wanting to return home from shame of not being able to help Rin, he teleports back to Madara's keep.
Madara probably doesn't use Obito's anger against Kakashi to fuel his change. In fact, Madara probably defends Kakashi, calling Kakashi's failure to save her merely a piece of the puzzle in the world of pain and suffering. Once Obito realizes that Madara's words are true, he dedicates himself to the cause. Madara will give Obito his left eye and his collection, train him to use his Kamui ability. After Madara dies, Obito is to build a clan of shinobi, capture the tailed beasts, use Rinne Tensei to bring Madara back just as the nine tailed beasts are connected to Gedo Mazo, connect Madara to it so he can implement the Tsukuyomi.
I don't think it's that far fetched. This is a manga about ninjas with magic powers dude, not Real World or a Coen brothers movie.
