Heck just take a look at the street fighter game series story alot of rectons and backtracking on years have been made just to fit the current SFIV storyline.

No kidding, since the moderate successes of the Street Fighter III series with dumping the original cast minus Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li, I think they used 4 story to be set in between SF 2 and 3 is because the original world warriors plus new ones added to the plate, were still around and people for years have been following since the days of SF 2. Plus it's easier to ensure success because characters from SF 2 like Guile, Sagat, Bison, and Blanka are more popular than Alex, Urien, Sean, Gill, and Elena from the 3 series.
