With a story like this, it seems that the supernatural stuff is all done to service the drama aspect, which takes primacy. With that in mind it's a little more serviceable.
I found this episode quite sentimental, since the heroines whose routes have been covered were each briefly brought back into focus. Particularly Haruka's "happy-serious", which is a bit rare to see.
Kengo was pretty amusing here. I guess all the energy reserved for kendo found a new outlet.
