I'm thinking that Key's works doesn't really work well with anime-format. This is more apparent on
Clannad and
Little Busters, due to how the content of game was structured.

Precisely the formula they use on most of their works. The way how they roll on
Clannad and
Little Busters is to use the comedy as part of the main factor for gathering emotional attachment to the character in order to make the following melodrama take effect, though, this can be a hit or miss depending on how the development and execution go. I know some people are put off by this method.
