Kariya is member of the Matou which is one of the 3 founding mage family involve in the grail war. He didn't have enough magic circuits but zouken increase that with the worms which will kill him in a month.
Ryuunosuke is the only one without ties to magic before the grail war.

Thinking about it...Kariya and Shirou are kinda similar in that they both had "zero talent" and no training, but both have potential. It's my understanding that Shirou had the circuits but needed to tap into more of them and Kariya just didn't have a lot of circuits to begin with so the worms filled that gap? I'm sure if Kariya hadn't left the family and trained as a magus, he would have been super awesome. But then the whole storyline for FSN would be screwed up, especially Heaven's Feel. So no super awesome Kariya for us. I still love him though.
