I can't help but think of Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters with Alones taking the place of Vaglas.
Much like Vaglas Megazords the Alone need a marker or beacon to teleport from a hyperspace parallel dimension to the real world.
Something clicked with the description of Rei having superhuman abilities and not being quite human. That sounds like Akane.
