It was only worse because of disorderly conduct, something you would hardly see in DPRK. If DPRK was like the USSR, we would have seen tens of thousands being crushed after Kim Il Sung's death.
One thing that is undeniable: Almost everyone of the average people loved or at least respected Kim Il Sung, even with all his faults. Unbelievable to most, but the truth nevertheless.
