This is a question that should be in the Playback Forum, but I believe the answer is that VLC has somewhat limited support for ASS/SSA subtitles. These are the "soft" subs that are common in modern anime files in the Matroksa container. The usual answer is to use a different player like the ones in
CCCP. Another alternative is
smplayer, which uses the
mplayer program as its engine.
