I think it's easier to see the picture if you read the timeline thread. I understood a lot more about him after revisiting the show. ~I think Nina wanted to forgive Johan for killing the Lieberts. She regretted that she shot Johan because that only served to manifest the 'monster' in him since his closest relative is turning her back on him and pushing him further into solitude. By forgiving him, his 'monster' will perhaps diminish. Nina was saved by Bonaparta through his words. Probably Johan will be saved too if his sister forgave him. You know, love saves people? (i'm not so sure though..) ~Johan is trying to re-enact the scenario in Kinderheim. But this time he will fall, and Tenma will be the victor.
