Hmm... that "give up on being human => become inhuman => problematic with lovers" part reminded me of quite a few of Japanese games where exactly that can happen. Ironically(?) it leads to the harem endings. It also involves judicious use of tentacles. Examples would include Kamidori Alchemy Meister's spiritual predecessor, I think, as well as ... quite a few, if not all, of the Venus Blood titles?
