You don't NEED to watch Seed to understand Destiny, it's kinda like you don't need to know what happened in MSG to watch Z Gundam.
Of course it would be better if you do watch Seed first, since they are in the same timeline, no doubt Destiny would keep reference events that happened to Seed.
