They were manipulated by the AIM field, they didn't have Imagine Breaker or plot armour like Hamazura or Accelerator to prevent them from going out of control.
It also says their sense of justice and desire to protect was artificial, wouldn't surprise me if they were just normal students with their sense of justice amplified dozens of times.
After rereading that part, the desire to protect her makes them sound like lolicons.
