It was probably a little fast to have grown a beard that thick. But it's been a while since the Phantom incident. Might remember wrong, but think it's been around a year since Lucy joined Fairy Tail. At the very least it's been some months since that incident. Plus probably best for Lucy's father to have an image change to physically represent his new start.
