To be fair, Haruhi seems to be returning to a spotlight with Vol. 9/10... And she's in the forefront of Wandering Shadow, too.

But Kyon doesn't CARE.
If you look at it this way, the story developments make sense. Kyon openly lusts after Mikuru, and later Yuki, a lot more than he does over Haruhi, and he
hates all other men.
It's useful to not forget that Kyon is the main character. That means something.
