The old traditional triangle has been the ShimaxMorixKodai axis that quickly resolves to KodaixMori with Shima only reminding them of it once later on.
Spoiler
for
Yamamoto in 2201
:
Yamamoto had some good scenes with the Space Marines during their trip to Telezart. Then had his final bow out by taking the shots meant for Kodai. Though I think in the PS2 game he can survive.
If the new Yamamoto follows the same fate, she will also take a bullet for Kodai, but by then, I think any of them would have.
Spoiler
for
Farewell Yamato (2201)
:
That is a film I would rather they not did. The story was good, but it sort of ends it all. Kind of like the live action movie...no room for sequel or even fanfiction. Add to that I didn't care for the style of the ending. Having it end wasn't so bad, I can accept that, I just would rather see it happen. Somehow it is more satifying to me if I see the hero ship take out the bad guys with its last gasp. A flash of light and a crashing sound followed by text just doesn't do it for me. Even if they had a cry worthy piece of music and ghosts of the crew leading the old girl on her path to oblivion. Also there is a weird gaff where you see Yamato heading towards Zordars' Dreadnought from EDF Command, but in all other shots, there is just empty space ahead of Yamato. Final Yamato's ending was more satifying as we say her go down one last time.
I liked the series version of it better. It was longer so it had more character development, especially for Shima. And it had even more development for Dessler of all people. His turn around in that series was far better done than in the film.
