How about Phantom: Requiem for the Phantom?
Not really a romance show but has implications, but still realistic and dark story about assasins. Has a good story and great cast of characters, at one point you hate them yet at another start to feel sorry. Has several dramatic and tence moments.
And some shooting action.
Let me know if you liked it when you are done.
Also duno if you tried but how about Clannad, season 2 highlights romance drama the best. The guy doesn't have huge ego and the girl isn't fighting against beauty queens.
Ga-Rei Zero maybe... it is more friendship based but has romance too together with sword action.
