Full Metal Panic only works up as a hard real robot series up until you realize that their are handful of robots running around with what might as well be the very definition of a deus ex machina system. After this Lambda Driver is introduced your mileage may vary. Personally I still don't know why people recommend it as a hard real robot series.
Instead I'd recommend the MS Igloo series which puts 08th MS Team to shame within the Gundam franchise in terms of depicting realistic mecha action. Votoms as mentioned is also a good bet and even includes a lot of good old fashion infantry gunfights at times.
