During the magical girl craze of the 90s, I can't really recall any shoujo-themed magical girls fighting with their fists or anything like that.
It was always wand-waving or something similar.
Then came 2000, and I got to see Kaitou Jeanne throw a
policeman over her shoulder into a pond.
Kick ass.
But wait, didn't the Magic Knights fight with swords? Eventually?
Or was it only magic fire, wind, and water?
