As you said Romance in flame of recca was cheesy but there were no stupid shipping wars(watever you call it) in both yu yu and recca.. a female character was fixed as a love interest,during the course of story hints were given that there was a development in relationship and romance never overshadowed the main plot,some thing which most shonen manga today cant do..
