To be honest, when I see Gen Urobuchi's name attached to a work, the level of darkness vary between his works as well the associated genres and themes. While there is always some dark aspects in most of his works, it doesn't always mean the story will turn mostly somber be it sooner or later. I can already see Gen overcoming somewhere in
Psycho-Pass, maybe it's because he's now affixed to a political sci-fi writting with some character-driven elements. Even though
Gargantia is perhaps intended to be Urobuchi's most lighthearted title so far, it means it gets darker later on, but also not as dark as
Madoka Magica or
Psycho-Pass I guess.
