This is the most likely route. given the approach and atmosphre that the manga and Nove are getting into the martial arts stuff my guess is that they will manage to reach a pretty amazing progress into the tournament for a group of newbies but will ultimately lose to learn that they still have a large path to walk and gather the motivation to become stronger(reminds me of Ash Ketchum during the beginning of Pokemon, skilled and lucky but ultimately unexperienced). Then it probably comes a sub-tournament arc, or probably some adventure when they share screentime with some of their previous tournament rivals to show them that even if they loosed on the tournament they're pretty awesome on a real battle and such(unlikely but it will be an interesting mini-arc xD).

Want to see a sub-adventure with Miura and Harii xD.
