I'm saying it didn't defy expectations. Something the series had been doing constantly and what made it so superior to most other manga's. It would have raised the ending from good to excellent if it had done something to defy fan expectations of what was going to happen.
Up till hohenheim's death everything had been in line with the series. But flipping through the pages after you just knew that there was going to be a winry/ed scene. A scene where roy and scar talk about ishvalians. Where ling goes back.
I just think the ending was too methodical for fma. It was done to appease a fanbase who wants to see how and where everyone in the story ends up.

Yeah, except only two of those three things we "just knew we'd see" happened, and neither in necessarily expected ways.
And speaking of expected?
Spoiler for 108:
Totally called Al coming back and Ed keeping the automail leg. Yep. *pats self on back* Was off about most everything else, though.
As for the lack of Royai in the ending, I think the only blind people left are the ones reading the manga... Look at the picture of Roy on the last page. You want to know why he looks "weird"? Look at his eyes. Not just the way that they're apparently working, but the way they're shaped. He may not be showing it with the rest of his face, but his eyes are smiling. Smiling. Sure, he smiles and laughs when playing his part as a lecherous buffoon, but it never reaches his eyes. Think about it. Have we ever, ever seen him with as contented and happy a look in his eyes, as he is there with Riza? We may not be getting a "sappy" family portrait from those two, but you can bet there's more to her working "under him" than ranks would suggest... ^_^
And yes, she cut the hair. She's still beautiful, of course, but I'm not sure how I feel about that...
I can say this is hands down the best ending I've ever seen in any manga, and best in any genre production outside of the Cowboy Bebop anime (that's going to be hard to beat).
