What you did wrong:
1. You put softsubs into AVI
2. You tried to watch softsubs without a softsub renderer
The solution for #1 is to use a better container format, like MKV. (you could also hardsub, but that requires reencoding and isn't as nice)
As for 2, install VSFilter (or just get CCCP). Or you could watch it in MPlayer, which can render subs by itself.
