It seems he was not a converter to Islam, but rather a lifelong Muslim...at least judging by the interview Shep Smith had with Hassan's cousin.
Very strange case, though. He seems to have been quite desperate to stay out of the war(s), to the point where he finally just snapped. Not to make light of the situation, but I was immediately reminded of the so-called disgruntled mailmen when I first started watching/reading about this tragedy earlier today.
