I don't think that the toned-down fight scene is as much of a loss as people are making out. The way I'd summarize that whole scene goes as follows:
Spoiler for episode:
- Kyon realizes Haruhi convinced Tsuruya to spike Asahina's drink, in order to get her to relax and look "erotic" for her scene. Kyon, who was angry already, is now getting seriously angry.
- Kyon orders Koizumi to stop playing the scene, and Koizumi complies, saying that Asahina has reached her limit anyway.
- Haruhi heads over to Asahina, and blames her for getting too drunk, when it was Haruhi's idea to spike her drink. This angers Kyon further.
- Haruhi asks Asahina to wake up, and gives her a tap on the head with the horn to wake her up. This angers Kyon more.
- Haruhi complains that Asahina's reaction to the horn tap was "no good." Asahina's reflexes are, of course, deadened by the sake. Kyon gets even angrier.
- Haruhi taps Asahina one more time as "training"; that is, to give her an "opportunity" to react once more, but this time "correctly" (i.e., as Haruhi wants).
- Haruhi taps a third time, as more "training."
- Kyon tells Haruhi to stop and starts arguing with Haruhi.
- Haruhi tells Kyon to shut up, and that she doesn't have to answer to him on how she "uses things." (So that by Haruhi's own words, Asahina is a "thing" that she uses.)
- Kyon and Haruhi argue some more. Kyon gets still angrier.
- Kyon tells Haruhi that Asahina is not her toy.
- Haruhi answers that Asahina is her toy.
- Kyon loses it, and tries to hit Haruhi, but Koizumi stops him.
I really don't think the scene is any worse than in the novel. In the novel version the hard smacks don't send Kyon over the edge; he holds Haruhi's arm in order to stop her from hitting Asahina anymore. What sends him over the edge is this:
