I like Gaia's transformation in SEED Destiny. Is it practical? Maybe not, but in a world where humanoid mechas can potentially keep up with airplane-shaped mechas in an aerial dogfight, a beast-like transformation is refreshing.
It helps that I also like the transformation/mechas in Beast Wars (primarily), Beast Machines and Zoids Genesis.
