Yeah. I just watched the episode and felt that their putting on those goofy masks and going on that mission when they could cause it to fail was totally random. But when he got shot and Mahiro screamed his name, I couldn't help but roll my eyes. I never read the manga but I was bloody damn certain that was unnecessary anime-original drama.
