Knowing Mashima-sensei's story style, it's fairly easy to guess what might have happened with the entire Elfman losing control of himself. Even in this special, Elfman said that he couldn't manage a full body 'Take Over' like his sisters. Easy to figure that the day Elfman managed his first full body Take Over was also his last for a number of years afterward - same day for Mirajane that she stopped using their 'Take Over' magic as well.
