You know, this kind of story-driven, genuine fantasy story is surprisingly rare in manga. We have plenty of derivative JRPG spinoffs, comedic fantasy parody interludes, shounen fighting series and shoujo romance series with fantasy backdrops, but straightforward "classic" fantasy -- the sort seen here, with long adventures and characters you are meant to love -- is really, really rare.
It reminds me of how ANN's Jason Thompson portrayed the similar (if darker and somehow lonelier)
Kazan, especially his conclusion at the end: "[it] is a manga which was important to its creator, and you can tell, and that's the best compliment I can pay it[.]"
