Consider that what we see is
completely different to Mami's description, there's no light or energy flowing from grief seed to soul gem. Instead we see darkness flowing out of the soul gem. It's possible that whoever ends up at the end of the proverbial bucket chain of dark energy ends up corrupted into a witch.
