@ Demi - It's not about being better than the criminal:/ He starts out as type I because he follows the "Batman policy" (No killing) and goes lower on the scale once he sees more and more depraved and evil individuals. Rather than trying to be better, he just stops caring about them living and won't go out of his way to help them if they're in trouble. He himself remarks this doesn't make him a hero, just pragmatic. I guess you can say he gets more and more cynical and his actions follow.
Kinda like shooting Joker in the face rather than sending him to jail for the umpteenth time.
