It's not, for example, *i*, who should choose what can possibly annoy/offend/outrage people, so I have to watch my words since *I* care about the other people.
You are allowed to swear and curse, but I think it's more about being well-mannered or not. For example, if you know that you'll have to cook for a bunch of people, and that you are unaware of some of those people tastes, you will not try to cook a dish that is often only liked by a few people, instead you will cook something that is quite popular among most of the people.
