In the original novel Journey to the West, Sun Wukong raised havoc in the heavens, was sealed by a buddha, then released and tasked with guarding the Tang monk Xuanzang on the actual journey to the west. After completing his task, he was promoted to the ranks of the buddhas.

In the Campione universe, he must have been subsequently summoned as a Heretic God and sealed in Japan, released every now and then to handle crises related to dragon or snakes.
