I feel when you start implementing romance in a show that does not need it, it becomes something along the lines of a parasite, slowly killing it's host while nourishing itself. That's why I very much prefer romance in a non-romantic show to be subtle.

Well, from an anime only perspective, that pessimism might have some basis, but so far, they've been very faithful. It is very hard to reply to you without spoiling, but I have to disagree with you that romance is to the detriment of the plot and main theme of the story. Rather, it is integral to the underlying non Romantic theme of Hagani, that of Friendship.
