I liked it, because the KOB guild leader is perfectly calm during almost all the fight, it's Kirito who's going berserk trying to defeat his 'perfect defense'. Kirito is trying to move faster and faster with his dual blades, whereas his opponent is calmly watching and blocking everything with his shield and just landing a few glancing blows against a berserk attacker.

Lots of MMO's have unfairly effective status effects. It's sort of a staple. Eve Online's E-War basically means you're stuck twiddling your thumbs for a pretty solid chunk of any fight it's used in. FFXI is very similar... you can be locked down for nearly a minute vs. a monster that couldn't actually kill you if you weren't paralyzed (but can do a much better job of it vs. a paralyzed opponent).
It is also to show them that their guild is still the strongest. Also, it can be used for recruitment.

Yup. This might be Kirito's disadvantage. He somewhat now over reliant in his speed to beat most of his opponents.

If you want unfair, try Shin Megami Tensei games or Atlus games in general, status effects can literally screw with you when you least expect it.
