I have mixed feelings about the ending, and this whole prequel in general. It seemed like they only grazed the heart of the story. They barely did anything with Ryunosuke and he didn't have much meaningful interaction with any of the characters. He was more of a bystander than a protagonist. His relationship with Serizawa wasn't developed enough to make his reaction to his assassination believable.
We didn't learn all that much about the Shinsengumi's past either. Only Okita's background was expanded. It feels like they could have done so much more.
In the end, this prequel felt pretty pointless.
