I would say that the canards are lifting canards and the vertical stabilisers are to counteract the extra angular momentum when doing a yaw. It must be due to the weight AEWCS and the beam cannons that make it require such modifications, but won't the aircraft frame be damaged due to the immense mass of the extras?

I think the aircraft would fare better in space under zero-G conditions, but let's bring it to the technology discussion thread.
