Mostly on the fly really.
Only his doctor knows that previous memories of his are caput.
Plus being a student of Academy City he must have a personal file in some database for the basics.
That is how he knows about Imagine Breaker.
Though we don't know if there is something classified about him and his ability. As speculated by Stiyl and Kaori.
Aleister seems to imply that Imagine Breaker has a purpose like Deep Blood has.
