Spoiler for TSF development:
TSFs were created as powered walkers for use on the moon's surface, as BETA had been located on Mars as of WW2 time. However, development was not made faster until the fall of moon (aka irl after WW2 through to Cold War, vietnam war). So if you follow the timeline modern planes are developed, it would be roughly the same time.
As for how powerful BETAs are, i think they are exactly the right power. Not at the level of Starship troopers novel, where they all have lasers, but at the level of the movie, so its mostly swarm tactics. It needs to be at a level where humanity almost does not stand a chance, for the plot to work. Please note that the size of the main BETA forms are of just right to justify having giant humanoid mecha...
Also, while the destroyer class has armor upfront (the ones that tank shells bounce off), they dont at the back, and most of the beta have weak spots somewhere.
