To be fair, MuvLuv is a pretty serious setting for the most part. And unlike Nanoha, IS and ToAru, it is very complicated setting with a lot of side-materials. It helps that most players were blindsided by MLU then MLA's PTSD Arc. You really have to play the trilogy to truly know why they're like that.
