They had a choice between ending the series on a cliffhanger or cutting stuff to fit in a one-season series. Stuff like what happened in ep 5 is inevitable. In fact most of the complaints from novel readers here are coming from the omissions. They HAVE to happen. If you let those scenes go and see the anime on its own merits, it'll be easier to follow.

They omitted the fact that yoshinon is an actual alternate personality living inside yoshino, but it's not actually necessary to keep the story forward. We're not seeing plot holes resulting from this.

And Zadkiel freezing the AST reminded me of Godzilla sweeping planes with his atomic breath.

It's not necessary for the main plot, sure but it totally ruined Yoshino character, the dual personality part is what makes her character sympathetic and the anime removed it

The fact that Shidou is adopted, and Tohka/Shidou scene at the end of volume 2. The latter isn't necessary for plot, but it's such a great scene and it's character development.

Also Kotori's meeting with Ratatosk higer ups
