It's Shinkai, he's more like a creator of great animes rather than an innovator of anime. Though all of his works are romance in the reminisce kind of romance. His works always question us "Is the wait all worth it at the end?" But I suppose in the anime sence, it does.
ps: i know nothing of his new anime at the moment, gotta go read about it now ^_^.
