And while it's possible that it was just her subconscious, how does that prove anything about Shun being alive? (Btw Saki is anything but timid... ) And everything leading up to him "appearing" in her mind pretty much disproves Shun remotely helping her, starting with the fact that unless he found a way to cure his illness (in which case why wouldn't he tell anyone?) he simply wouldn't be in a condition to stalk anyone unnoticed. (Never mind that he would be stark raving mad by then...)
Really, aside of everything I mentioned in the previous post, what would be the point of him being alive? Nothing whatsoever. It would just cheapen everything. The only reason why some people want him alive is because they like him so much they don't want to see him dead.
Spoiler for Satoru:
Well, it's not really a personal preference that they're not together because they're using each other as a replacement for Shun. And it's also made clear that they love each other and care about each other. If you think it's not romantic love... that's your interpretation, but given that Saki tells him she loves him, and they end up marrying and spending their life together and have a kid and all, I think at this point the question is moot. They're best friends, lovers and husband and wife, end of story.

I agree that you reasoning is valid and I admit I like Shun. I think the author decides to end this way because he can consider reuse this character if he ever writes a sequel. (btw are you following the prequel?) I'm pretty sure the author can come up a better reason than me if he decides to
I always thought Maria and Mamoru have a daughter because when Saki saw the child she said it looks like Maria, so I immediately thought it is a girl. (My Japanese level isnt that high so I didn't read the book in details) Thanks for that.
As for the relationship, since the narrative is Saki I cannot still be sure Satoru loves Saki (she can interpret Satoru the way she wants), having a kid dont mean they love each other as it is common to have sex in their world anyway. But I guess you are right 20 years is enough for a person to forget a person. I guess eternity love doesnt exist afterall.
