What Yuuichi was trying to do is pound some sense into Mai.
Remember, this is a girl who just moments prior went on a sword-swinging rampage, causing a considerable amount of property damage. Then, she tried to kill herself. He was cradling her head like that to make eye contact with Mai, making sure she heard and understood everything he had to say. It's a very drastic measure to take, but what she did was equally if not more drastic.

The hug at the end was definitely appropriate because both of them had seen something dreadful happen to their friend.
