I don't get the feeling that Duo was ever madly in love with Hilde. It only felt that Duo cared for her, like he just took to living with her because, hey, let's face it, two are better then one. If he had found a kid or some random adult who was out and down on their luck , he probably would have asked them to come live with him too. At least, that's how I fell about it.
