To be fair, volume 2 was written after the events of 1which explains some inconsistencies. He is a reluctant hero meaning which is seen in his hesistant behaviour in saving them. Also what he said in volume 2 is for the benefit of Liz which is he rather die with her, which is way he went in when Asuna went in If he had gone in Klein and Asuna would have gone in and he would be responsible with putting their lives in danger instead. So he was hesistant.
