Actually, no, the anime is following novel volume 1 perfectly. Novel volume 1 starts off with this introduction with Kirito and Klein, the announcement, and them parting ways.
Episode 1 covered chapters 1-3 of volume 1 and the very first sentence of chapter 4. (the 2,000 death toll note after the credits) Chapter 5 is just one long description of what has happened over the first two years and the current state of the game world, which will probably take all of 5 or so minutes at the beginning of episode 2. Chapter 6 moves on to......the main story, to avoid novel spoilers.
So none of this episode was anything not seen in volume 1.
